Screenity and Screencappy: which one do you need?

Screenity records video. Screencappy captures still images of full web pages. They do not overlap, and if you arrived here comparing them, the honest answer is that you probably want one or the other rather than a winner.
Screenity is an excellent free, open source screen recorder. It does not take screenshots at all. Screencappy takes full page screenshots and does not record video.
Does Screenity take screenshots?
No. It records video of a tab, a region, the desktop, an application or a camera.
We checked this in the source rather than assuming: the repository contains no screenshot capture code, and the permissions it requests are video capture APIs. If you need a still image of a whole page, Screenity is not the tool, and it does not claim to be.
What does Screenity do well?
A great deal, within screen recording. Unlimited recordings with no watermark, drawing and annotation over the screen while recording, blurring of sensitive content, zoom, a full editor for cutting and trimming, and export to MP4, GIF and WebM.
It is free, open source under GPL-3.0, and needs no sign in. On the Chrome Web Store today it shows 200,000 users and a 4.4 rating from 750 ratings. Reviewers single out the developer's responsiveness as often as they praise the software.
Is Screenity really free?
The extension is free and always has been. There is an optional paid hosted platform, Screenity Pro, at $10 per month or $120 billed yearly, which adds cloud storage and sharing.
The store listing is explicit that Pro is optional and that the core extension will remain free, private and open source. That is a fair model and worth saying so.

Both tools are open source. Screenity is GPL-3.0 and Screencappy is Apache-2.0, which are different licences, not better and worse ones.
Which one should you use?
If you need to show something happening over time, a bug reproducing, a workflow, a demo, use Screenity. It is the best free option for that and we would recommend it without reservation.
If you need one image of an entire page, for a design review, an archive, a bug report or a receipt, use Screencappy. Plenty of people install both, and they do not conflict.
